Bush Invites Democrats to Discuss Iraq

President Bush invited lawmakers to the White House next week to try to break the stalemate on Iraq war funding, but he made it clear yesterday that he is not budging on his key demand -- a "clean" bill without "artificial deadlines" for withdrawal or restrictions on his commanders on the ground.

At the same time, Bush used a morning visit to American Legion Post 177 in Fairfax to renew pressure on Congress to send him the spending bill, warning that the Pentagon will soon be forced to transfer an additional $1.6 billion in funds from other military accounts to make up for a looming shortfall in funding for the Iraq operations. The appearance was another in a series of steps calculated at stiffening the spines of his conservative base for a coming confrontation with Democratic lawmakers.

New Hearst, Times JOA hints at future PI tabloid

The new joint-operating agreement (JOA) between The Seattle Times Co. and The Hearst Corp., unveiled Tuesday, include hints that Hearst's Seattle Post-Intelligencer could switch to a tabloid format.

P-I Publisher Roger Oglesby said Tuesday that such a change "has been discussed at the P-I quite a bit over the past few years." It would serve to differentiate the smaller P-I from The Times, he said.

Oglesby said he didn't know whether a tabloid P-I would increase combined revenues for the two newspapers, but "it's certainly something worth talking about."

The new JOA was signed Sunday, ending a four-year-old legal dispute between the two companies that was to have gone Monday to binding arbitration — a private, closed-door trial with no appeal.

Jet, Sahara deal almost done, hitches over payment

MUMBAI: For all practical purposes, the deal between Jet Airways and Air Sahara is through, sources close to the development said. An arbitration panel that was set up to hear both sides of the arguments postponed the final hearing to Thursday morning. Sources said this was because both sides could not come to an understanding on the final modalities of the payment.

As things stand now the enterprise value of Air Sahara is Rs 2,050 crore. Of this, Jet has already paid Air Sahara Rs 500 crore. After factoring in for adjustments on immovable property that Air Sahara owns, the helicopters in its fleet and the interest it has earned until now against Rs 500 crore, the final amount Jet now has to pay for the acquisition is Rs 950 crore.

For a good part of Wednesday, Naresh Goyal of Jet and Subrata Roy of Sahara were holed up with their top teams at the business centre of a plush South Mumbai hotel.

LA Acad's injuction dismissed

A U.S. District Court judge has dismissed the Los Angeles-based TV Academy's request for a preliminary injunction against its New York counterpart.

Judge Manuel Real ruled Tuesday that the dispute between the West Coast Academy of TV Arts & Sciences and the East Coast's National Academy of TV Arts & Sciences should be settled in arbitration rather than in the courts.

ATAS had filed suit against NATAS last week, arguing that the New York academy was attempting to launch a massive roster of Broadband Emmy awards without proper approval.

NATAS took issue with ATAS' decision to file suit given that the two sides were already in arbitration on the matter.

Real agreed with NATAS and said the disagreement should go back to arbitration.

"The judge has not ruled on the merits of the case.
